How Piero Sraffa found Ricardo's letters to Mill

Pier Luigi Porta*

*University of Milan Italy

Abstract

One of the most intriguing stories in Sraffa's time as Ricardo's editor is provided by the search for Ricardo's letters to James Mill. This turned out to be one of the most exciting scholarly discoveries ever made, one that was rightly compared with the famous find of the Boswell manuscripts in the inter-war period. In his General Preface to the Works and Correspondence of David Ricardo, of December 1950, Piero Sraffa briefly tells an extraordinary story of unfailing tenacity combined with exceptional good luck

Manuscript received May 31, 1993; final version received July 28, 1993.
